  1. Stoic, I'm going to kick your @ss!!  I've been excitedly waiting for the release of this movie for a few months. I finally got a chance tonight but guess what? I came across your Ebert review an hour before movie time. You gave away tooooooooo much. In particular Pumpkin's betrayal. I spent the whole movie anticipating when, where and how Pumkin would strike. A symbol of elegancy and eternal beauty. A geisha will never be more than half a wife. The scene by the lake btwn the two lovers was distrubing. I couldn't move beyond the age difference to enjoy the sensuality and touching moment when they reveal their undying love for each other. How does a man at least 3 times older find a 9 year old pre-adolesent attractive, yuck!! It was a good movie. It remainded me of a Japanese series I loved watching religiously in my yonder years called Oshin. It's about a little poor girl who eventually becomes the owner of a big supermarkert chain in Japan. The "eel in the cave" comment had me cracking up. This Japanese metaphor conveys the actual event much better than the 'bird and the bees' metaphor. I can just see it now...a withered eel and a cobweb cave. Ooooh, you Somalis hurry up and give xalimos and faraxs a chance.
  2. Yo, this attention deficit disorder of yours has gone on for long enough Please schedule an appointment with your nearest psyciatrist. Heck, SOL will even foot the bill. Isn't Bosaso where all the wadaado where kicked out of????? P.S. Bosaso doesn't need another Siad Barre.
  3. How sad. As a scientist, all they have is their research integrity. How devestating this news must be to the stem cell community especially at a time when war has been declared stem cell research.
  4. ^lol, balls of steel is what you got sis. To enter a mushy marriage thread and defy the normal congrats, blessing etc. Will the pack of wolves attack now? lol
  5. 2005?? What an amazing year, alhamdullah, health and family all doing good, thanks to Allah. The year I became a vagabond...dirty south, mid-west and east coasting...a few months here, there and nowhere. Amist all the challenges , I met so many amazing people and learnt a lot about myself. Wonderful family news, at last we'll all be re-united. My life coach, castro, I will forever be indebted to you. You got me through some rough times. Me, my future career and my sanity thank you, coach. ;)Shukran sxb Best of all, dream J.O.B, alhamdullah I cherish every (up & down) moment of 2005. Happy Green Day folks.
  6. ^Idil, ain't that the truth What good is a skinny faraxs if they can't even spend a little $$$ to lure a date? Come on now why they got to play dense? Is all this talk coz U got stood up last night? Ooooh, poor baby.
  7. Ladies don't even dignify this drivel with a response. The idea of peace on SOL irked the boy so badly he decided to bait the ladies. Is that the best you got Yoonis? The boy is trying to cause division among SOL members.Yoonis, are you trying to steal Nur's role while he's on sabaatical? How un-boyish of you. U sure made me laugh. Can I nominate you for the trash talker of the year? Springer watch your back!!
  8. Subhan'allah, that is truly unfair. Forgive me, I have an ignorant question to ask? Has it always been that bad for women of color in the UK and 9/11 only amplified it? Or did all this under-the-table discrimination take root after 9/11? I wonder what the stats would be for the US?
  9. ^Tks walaalo, the project is finally over. I'm officically done with my senior design requirment (hurray...best of luck on your assignments. Take the quiz on procrastination, I think you have the symptoms. Breach of contract, yaa right. Your forgetting one thing. I'm Somali!! We breach every contract every created. I'll make a deal with you. I'll stop sharing SOL with non-Somalis when Somali men stop marrying non-Somalis, deal or no deal? P.s. They luved the thread on why somali women marry white guys. lol It had them rolling. The super obese guy grossed 'em out but they couldn't stop talking about it either. They're hooked I tell you!!
  10. Can one nominate themselves? I see no clause that prevents it.
  11. Koool, the colors are wild. I have a question. The eyes? What's the intent? Tks
  12. ^^Haniif, I see u're thought process was cutoff by a rush of testosterone.
  13. Shouldn't they call it Buntland lol, reminds me of Bebsi.
  14. Shouldn't they call it Buntland lol, reminds me of Bebsi.
  15. Now, let me introduce you to the worlds smallest violin. Rub your index finger against your thumb to produce classic music. There. You can do it. lol, point don't mind him. Castro's vocab is limited and unfortunately the violin thing has been the in-word for him for quite a while. Castro isn't it time to retire the damn word!!
  16. Rockstar dear that’s wonderful and I hope you know how lucky you are to have such an amazing dad, masha'allah. A smart person would realize your dad is not the average farax and would be wise not to assume all farax's are wired that way. My comments were regarding the average farax population and not the slim picking that wouldn't even make it onto a statistical chart. Why don't you ask other farax's in your city if they would do what your dad does? Guess what they'd be insulted at your question, try it. Since you mentioned the exception to the rule let me add in my two cents. I didn't mention my dad coz he doesn't fall into the average farax category. He too is super amazing father. Even after 40 yrs of marriage, he treats my mom like a princess. He acts like a love sick puppy during the months when my she crosses the Atlantic to visit some of her kids. And a week before she flies back, he metamorphoses into a giddy teenage boy and starts buying new furniture, her favorite dessert etc. He would cook for us when my mom was busy even though he sucks at cooking. During finals after salat al-fajr he would wake my siblings and I to study with a hot mug of coco in his hand. Damn, I can't remember the last time someone brought me something in bed aaah. And even though I'm no longer a child he never forgets my birthday. Nothing beats getting out of a class on your B-day only to find a voicemail with a 60+ yr old man's gruffly singing the birthday song in his ESL English.lol As a child, I took it for granted but now I know how fcking lucky I am to have this man as my dad. I won't even get started about one of my brothers. The man's as close to perfect as possible. The farax's cooking and cleaning ability puts all his sisters to shame. A college grad. who works in his major and also started a business with his friends fresh out of college. He spends all his time between his job and the business and on his nonexistent free time kicks my mom out of the kitchen and gives her a break. If he weren't my brother I'd be on my knees proposing in a minute. I apologize for the long post but I'm making a point. I'm not a hater towards faraxs but the majority needs to catch up to the few exceptions (Xamar is obviously one of ‘em). The first step to change is acceptance and the majority of faraxs need to stop with the whole marriage thing just because their tired of scabulo life to have someone cook, clean and provide easy, clean and available services. Rowda, luv your attitude. Ahura & Hodman beware of a man who cooks now. No guarantees he will later. U know what kills romance; lying!!
  17. There are 5 words a woman says to man that sc!ews the relationship. Where is this relationship going? A player replies with 5 words, I'll phone you next week.
  18. In the name of Allah, the most Merciful, the most Mercy-Giving SoundVision.com Newsletter Islamic Information and Products Tuesday, December 13, 2005, Zul-Qadah 11, 1426 AH http://www.soundvision.com Assalamu Alaikum: 'Only 12 days till' Christmas!' the lights, the songs, and the commercials remind us, as Americans prepare to celebrate one of the country's most important holidays. A growing number of Americans scoff at the consistent commercialization of what is essentially a religious holiday. There are also those who argue that Christmas has little to do with Prophet Jesus, peace be upon him, and more to do with Santa Claus. While devout Christians continue to voice these criticisms, Muslims need to step back a little. Regardless of how the holiday is celebrated, the bottom line is that it is the major holiday of our neighbors. Islam stresses the duty of respecting the beliefs and traditions of others, especially the People of the Book, whose connection to Prophet Abraham links our three faith groups. This week at Sound Vision, find out why it's important to treat Christmas with respect, whether you're in America or you're in a Muslim majority country. And remember: respect is not agreement with the beliefs and ideas associated with something. It is simply recognition of the God-given right of all to choose their faith and our responsibility to respect their choice. While Hajjis are getting ready to leave for Makkah, Eid is also less than a month away falling most likely on January 9th and 10th. Muslims in Chicago, Atlanta and Toronto are presenting theircommunities the chance to offer their Eid-ul-Adha sacrifice in January to the local poor. Find out more about our duty to those living in poverty in America and abroad. Both programs can be found online at www.chicagomuslims.com and www.torontomuslims.com. If you would like to start a similar program in your city, please email us at info@soundvision.com. Please put "Eid sacrifice" in the subject line of the email. Peace Abdul Malik Mujahid CHRISTMAS Treating Christmas with Respect by Abdul Malik Mujahid Christmas is an annual Christian religious holiday commemorating the birth of Prophet Jesus, peace be upon him. For many Muslims who even do not celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, it becomes an issue of what stand they should take. There have been a number of legitimate criticisms of the holiday from Muslims and non-Muslims based on theological and cultural considerations. However, this cannot be used to disregard the holiday as merely an exercise in ancient pagan practices, for instance, or excessive consumerism. Muslims have to remember that for practicing Christians, Christmas really is about Jesus. Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was so accommodating of Christians that according to the two earliest Islamic historians, Ibn e Saad and Ibn Hisham, the Prophet even allowed a delegation of 60 Byzantine Christians from Najran in Yemen to worship in his own mosque in Madinah. Lead by their bishop (Usquf), they had come to discuss a number of issues with him. When time of their prayer came, they asked the Prophet's permission to perform this in the mosque. He answered, "conduct your service here in the mosque. It is a place consecrated to God." God expects us to stay away from mocking the religious beliefs of others, no matter how much we disagree with them. He says in the Quran: "And insult not those whom they (disbelievers) worship besides God, lest they insult God wrongfully without knowledge. Thus We have made fair-seeming to each people its own doings; then to their Lord is their return and He shall then inform them of all that they used to do" (Quran, 6:108). We also have to remember that even if for many nominal Christians, the celebration is not really about participating in religious traditions, Christmas is a time for families to get together. In a number of cases it is the only time of year families get together, either because family members are scattered in different parts of the country or the world, because of communication and relationship problems, or because in America today, the family unit is becoming weaker and weaker. Christmas is a great time to relate to our neighbors. We should not forget though, that "relating" does not mean "preaching". Dawa cannot be made in a rude manner. Allah says in the Quran: "Invite (all) to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful advice, and reason with them by ways that are the best and most gracious: because your Lord knows best, (those) who have strayed from His Path, and those who receive guidance " (Quran, 16:125). In particular, when dealing with Jews and Christians, Allah says: "Do not argue with the People of the Book unless it is in the politest manner, except for those of them who do wrong. Say: 'We believe in what has been sent down to us and what has been sent down to you. Our God and your God is [the same] One, and we are Muslims before Him'" (Quran, 29:46). This may not be an occasion to emphasis the differences as much as the commonality of our beliefs, unless someone is really asking you about them. A starting point for a discussion about Christmas could be the Islamic belief in all Books revealed by Allah and all Prophets sent by Him. In this discussion, special emphasis could be made on Prophet Jesus. Non-Muslims are often surprised to discover that Muslims also believe in this noble Prophet and his great mother Mary (peace be upon her). Remember that respect does not mean compromise. This article is not asking you to compromise anything. You have freedom of religion given by God to believe in what you believe in. But in a world where conflict is increasing, a Muslim should be a bridge- builder and a peacemaker. It was due to the Muslim practice of Islamic ideals of respect and tolerance that the key of the holiest Christian Shrine in Jerusalem, the church of the Holy Sepulcher, remains entrusted with a Muslim family, as it has been for over 1400 years. These are the lessons which need to be learned by those extremists who attack Christians during their worship in Nigeria and those extremists who burn Masjids in the USA.
  19. Katrina before anything else can I have a practical session of measuring Voltage/current across inductors, capacitors checking results on the oscilloscope screen display. seems you have too much fun, time to share Practical session...it depends on how good a student you are. Since Greenland isn't in my realm of geography. How about an online session instead? First to measure voltage across the capacitor, inductor and resistor always place the multimeter in parallel BUT if you’re measuring current traveling thru the components. You take the end of the specific component out of the circuit and measure it in series using the multimeter. The oscilloscope can be used to find AC measurements. Keep in mind, the multimeter is mostly used for DC measurements. This ends our first e-tutorial session. Tu, if you pass the bench exam next week. You will advance to the next lab; Circuits Laboratory II (1 cr.) Experiments will cover electronic device characteristics, limitations and applications of operational amplifiers and feedback circuits. Lol Bro, what fun are you talking about? Its exam/project crunch time. In life it’s either the half-empty or half-full glass view. Thanks to genetics, I spent the first half of my life with the half-empty approach to life but alhamdu’allah with age comes wisdom. I use SOL to de-stress and goof off. The funny thing is my semester long group members for a design class (no Somalis) are enjoying SOL and often ask to see what’s new on SOL. I see we are the only two sad @sses online in front of a computer on a Sat. evening...back to the books.
  20. ^Foxy lady it's way out of control. We somalis have never been known to do things in moderation. We all hate to hear the truth, but Money=power Good Looks= satisfaction of Ones desire I don't know Foxy. That second statement doesn't ring true. What if I choose him based on "good looks" and then we get married and in the happily ever after I wake one morning to see him putting on a toupee, false teeth, scheduling a botex appointment and re-applying diane? Ain't no satisfaction in him no'mo. Sis, as you can see Tuk & Zu are true male species. After getting my hopes high and my head spinning with their attention they've dropped me. An abrupt ending to my 5 seconds of fame. Beware young xalimo's you could be next. I am here... watching..observing...waiting until Tukaale shoots his foot Good One, lol
  21. Seriously though, we are always moaning about guys not being romantic. How often do you see gals being romantic towards guys?! Now i can list a bunch of things you could do for a guy that can be considered romantic, but truth is so little of us do it, waa lagula yaaba hadaa dhahdid waxaas...because as women we enjoy being the star of the relationship...me, me, me. Born Friday, I agree with you but guess what?? I've tried it girl. What star are you talking about? I'm happy with the crumbs. I've done some mushy stuff for 'em. Listing 'em would make you laugh your **** off (have no fear moderators nothing R-rated) I've realized somali men appreciate it more when it's a hard core typical somali girl.
  22. God bless diaspora for teaching somali men how to live alone and cook for themselves. Girls...the chances of you finding men that cook for you is alot higher than a decade ago From your mouth to the doors of the sky (screwed up translation hehe). Jo, lately I've been thinking somali men who cook is an urban myth. Hear me out, most guys I've known eagerly point out that fact in the first or second conversation (like that's gonna win me over...sheesh) but I've yet to have any cook me a simple spagetti & tomato sauce meal. I won't even mention the possibiltiy of the impossible (gourmet meal) thereby leading to the obvious and logic hypothesis; an urban myth.lol When I see the tell all marks of spagetti strands on their kitchen walls then and only then will I become a believer. I also eagerly await the reply of our loving brothers but fear our wait might be an eternity. All jokes aside it would be wonderful to get insight into their thought process, especially with the anonymity of this cyber world. I think they must be shy. Is there anything Jo we can do to entice 'em. Come on boys oops I mean men have you no wisdom to bestow upon your lowly female counterparts. In retrospect every Somali man I've know needed a little help. I thereby volunteer myself and experiences as a test input. Bismillallah (clears throat), my experiences with romantic gestures and Somali men are minimal. Why? I don't know (shrugs shoulders) why but it might be my fault. My personality tends to intimidate their delicate & fragile ego, killing it!! Who's brave enough to follow my lead?
  23. Salaam Folks, I get updates from "Islamic City" site and here's an article I just finished reading...thought I'd share it. The path of marriage 12/9/2005 - Education Social Religious - Article Ref: IC0510-2811 Number of comments: 4 By: E Mansor, F Eunos & O Sidek IslamiCity* - "Your goal in the end is towards Allah: He will tell you the truth of the things wherein ye disputed. It is He who hath made you (His) agents, inheritors of the earth: He hath raised you in ranks, some above others: that He may try you in the gifts He hath given you:..."(An'am, 6:164-165) Life is a journey but there is no journey quite like Life. It begins from Allah and ends at Allah and the events that unfold in the journey are also premeditated by Allah . It is a journey specifically designed for mankind and, like most journeys, the experience therein is meant to enrich the traveler. Life on Allah's Earth is His scheme for Man's development. As Man journeys through, opportunities for his growth may come in the form of trials and challenges or as favors and gifts. Though we are given freedom to choose which path to travel on, we have also been shown the path called " Islam " which promises success in the Hereafter. It is a path that calls mankind to strive for comprehensive harmony with his Creator, society and Nature as a "way of life" in his pursuit to fulfill his potential as the best creation of Allah (Quran 95:4-6). As Man is mind, body and soul, Islam prescribes the attainment of correct thought, action and motivations as equally important prerequisites for well-balanced growth of the human personality towards its perfection. Thus iman (conviction), amal (action) and ihsan (God-serving conduct) are inter-linked in a comprehensive definition of the Islamic way of life, as found in the discourse between the Prophet Muhammad and the angel Jibrail 1 Marriage is not an incidental aspect of this way of life. Instead, it is part and parcel of it, as it figures significantly in each of the three aspects of iman, amal and ihsan. As a matter of faith (iman), Muslims regard it as a form of gift from Allah . As such, we enter into marriage with a great sense of responsibility and reverence. And being from Him, we are always careful not to abuse it for selfish gains. Instead, our marriage and family should be a major source of strength and support in our service to Allah . and society. For this purpose, in the practice (amal) of Islam, an aspect of Islamic law (Shariah) is devoted towards marriage and family. And through law, Islam proactively guides the conduct of partners in marriage to ensure that they transform their families into a cohesive unit of contributors to society. In principle, Islamic family law (munakahat) aims at ensuring harmony within the family and the community at large, in good times as well as in instances of divorce, as illustrated in Section III. When harmony prevails in the community and order is maintained in a family unit - broken or otherwise - the family unit functions in its best form possible and will thus, be able to maximize its potential in cultivating true servants of Allah and of society at large. Ultimately, the aim of Islam is to cultivate human character and, at the social level, human culture with the disposition of peace and harmony, out of love for Allah , mankind and the world. However, Islamic character and culture are more than just a matter of faith (iman) and action (amal), as they involve our entire being - in other words, every moment of our existence should be a conscientious service toward Allah And this is what the Prophet . defined as "best character" or ihsan. The attainment of ihsan however, requires a lifetime of attention and nurturing by the more enlightened ones who understand human nature and the necessary process for cultivating good characters. For a child, the family atmosphere of love, affection and joy is their best chance for getting the attention and nurture from more enlightened parents and other significant adults. Thus, marriage and family are part and parcel of Muslim life, as they figure significantly in the development of our iman, amal and ihsan. In a manner of speaking, if life is a journey and Islam is the path to a successful destiny, marriage is a vehicle well-suited for the journey towards peace and tranquility in this life, and success in the other. When we achieve peace within ourselves and with our spouse, we can then contribute to the development of the community by undertaking the task of spreading the peace of Islam to others. This could be in the form of being involved in community services or by helping others who are in need. At the very least, we will represent the image of Islam and our good and kind conduct to others, serving to publicize the teachings of our faith. Thus, at another level, we strive to extend tranquility beyond ourselves toward others. Across this entire process, what will be uppermost is the attainment of Ultimate Peace with our Creator. "And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect." Rum, 30:21) Source: "Tranquil Hearts" by Enon Mansor, Fatimah Eunos & Osman Sidek
  24. Ngonge those are beautiful pics, where did you find them? When ppl talked about collected artifacts/pics etc representative of their history and heritage. I would have a blank stare on my face (couldn't comprehend) but those pics have stirred something deep within my soul. I NEED MORE! What a novel idea? Tks for giving me an idea.
  25. If studying wasn't sooo boring...qabil hasn't done jack for me. I would like to fire my qabil, daanyeer any suggestions? I'd like to apply for the exchange program. Wouldn't it be fun to change qabil's like a pair of dirty worn out shoes?
