Richard Batista can live with his broken heart. He just can't bear his cheating wife living with his healthy kidney. The Long Island doctor wants the one-time love of his life to pay $1.5 million for the organ he bestowed on her eight years ago in a gift meant to save her life and their foundering marriage. "There's no deeper pain you can ever express than to be betrayed by the person you devoted your life to," Batista told reporters in Garden City Wednesday. "I saved her life. But the pain is unbearable." Batista charged his wife, Dawnell, repaid his gesture by first sleeping with her physical therapist - and then denying him access to their three kids in an increasingly bitter divorce. Adding to his anguish, Batista insists his decision to donate his kidney in 2001 was in part a failed effort to rescue their troubled relationship. "My first priority was to save her life," the 49-year-old doctor said. "The second bonus was to turn our marriage around." Dawnell Batista survived. Their marriage lasted just another four years, with the wife filing for divorce in July 2005. The once-happy pair met two decades ago when he was a resident and she a training nurse at North Shore Hospital. They were married in August 1990, celebrating with a lavish Long Island reception, and were soon living in a $1 million Massapequa home. The couple shared the joy of three daughters, but Dawnell was battling kidney failure and the couple's relationship turned shaky. Her husband - a surgeon at Nassau University Medical Center - injected her three times a week with medication as part of her health care regime. Dawnell's health continued to deteriorate. After two transplants failed, her husband volunteered to donate one of his kidneys - and discovered he was a match, a 1-in-700,000 shot. "I was the first and only one to step to the plate," the doctor recalled. Without his donation, Dawnell faced a long wait: There are 6,748 people awaiting kidneys in New York State, the New York Organ Donor Network says. Successful surgery followed at a Minnesota hospital on June 28, 2001. Batista said he was looking forward to happier times with his now-healthy bride - but his hopes proved futile. "Nothing changed," he said. Dawnell Batista viewed the kidney as a new lease on life, too. She returned to school to earn a master's degree in nursing, and took up karate, her husband said. After an injury suffered while trying to earn her black belt, she began physical therapy - which evolved into an affair with her therapist, Batista said. "It put a hole in my heart that still exists," Batista said of his wife's disloyalty. "To this day, I'm a man of pride. To be betrayed that way, humiliated - I can't even began to say." Dawnell Batista was not at her home Wednesday. Her lawyer did not return a call for comment. Batista said the ongoing ugliness began on day one of their divorce. "She slapped me with divorce papers when I was in surgery trying to save another person's life," he fumed. The case was apparently the first of its kind in New York State. Julia Rivera of the New York Organ Donor Network said she never heard of anything similar. "This is extraordinary," the spokeswoman said. Batista insisted his cash-for-kidney claim was a direct result of his wife's behavior. He said he hasn't seen his three daughters - ages 14, 11 and 8 - in months. "This is my last resort," Batista said. "I didn't want to be in the public eye." Despite the animosity, Batista insisted he would donate the kidney all over again to his hopefully soon-to-be-ex. He fondly recalls a visit to her room on the day after surgery. "There was no greater feeling on this planet," he said. "As God is my witness, I felt as if I could put my arm around Jesus Christ. I was walking on a cloud." Link What a B!!! She takes his kidney and cheats on him!!! Laakiin waxaan kayaabay, why did he wait for two transplants to fail before he 'stepped up to the plate'... Wuu ku sugay laakiin isboorkada!

Israel to halt operations in Gaza for short time periods to allow for humanitarian aid The military in Israel has said it will halt its operations in Gaza for a short time each day to allow humanitarian aid. Simon Horner, a UN aid worker, said that basic facilities are missing and need to be re-established right away. "This concept of a humanitarian corridor is all very well but it must actually involve the capacity to move around and deliver assistance inside and also to re-establish basic facilities which are missing like the basic water supplies," he said. "It isn't enough to have a three-hour window to reach the water systems that need to be repaired." Thirty-nine Canadians who haven't been able to get out of the region may be able to today. Israel is considering a ceasefire. Link How really considerate of them huh? Three hours!!!

The drive to school was just horrific this morning...The roads weren't that bad, but snow was falling hard and poor visibility...I heard it on the 680 News that the OPP has been responding to accidents every few minutes! An overnight snowfall has turned the city into a slick, sloppy mess and it's already wreaking havoc on the roads. Though we didn't see much of the white stuff - only a few centimetres overnight - that's all it takes for the crashes and collisions to start, and just in time for the morning rush hour. One van ended up in a ditch on a ramp from the QEW to Guelph Line at about midnight. The driver was shaken up but otherwise unhurt. Dozens more crashes have occurred over the past few hours, keeping the OPP busy. Link

Mustafa Mohamed Mussa's family will bury him today in the country where they sought a future free of violence and death. Mussa, 24, was Calgary's first homicide victim of 2009, dying during a fight outside a northeast bar while celebrating New Year's and a friend's birthday. Police have charged two brothers with second-degree murder in connection with the altercation at Coyote's Bar and Grill, and are still seeking a third suspect. "My son is dead and there's nothing much I can do, but I'm hopeful the (courts),which have the power to do something about it, will restore justice to my family," Mussa's father, Mohamed Mussa Elmi, said through a friend who provided translation. Mussa was born in Somalia, but his family fled their home in the northern city of Borame as civil war wracked the country in 1991. They settled in Ottawa, where Mussa grew up. "He was someone who liked to play sports and liked school," said his brother, Ali. Ali, a second-year student at the University of Ottawa, said his older brother wanted to continue school himself but needed to work to raise money for tuition. "He had to come here (to Alberta) to work because school's expensive," he said. Mussa's father said his son moved to Brooks in 2006 and had been working at Lakeside Packers and restaurant jobs. Elmi was visiting his son in Brooks last week and said Mussa went to Calgary on New Year's Eve to be with friends. After spending some time at a friend's house, the group headed for Coyote's. "There was a disagreement that occurred inside the pub. Later in the evening, it moved outside and became more deadly, unfortunately," said homicide Det. Patty McCallum. "We have a pretty good indication of the motive, but at this point, we're holding back that information." During the altercation, Mussa, a staff member from the bar and a third man were injured. None of the three men knew each other, said McCallum, adding Mussa may have been fatally wounded trying to break up a fight. Although Elmi isn't entirely sure what transpired the night his son died, he said Mussa was typically level-headed. "He was a very calm guy who never hurt anyone," he said. Mussa will be buried today in a Muslim cemetery northwest of the city after traditional Muslim rites and prayers, Elmi said. After leaving the strife of their homeland, having Mussa die at such a young age is "very painful," he said. The pain is shared by leaders of the local Somali community, who said 11 Somalis have died violently in Alberta in recent months. Mudhir Mohamed, president of the Somali Canadian Society of Calgary, said the community's grief over the deaths has been compounded by the fact the victims were hard-working immigrants who haven't been involved in criminal activity. Many of the cases are unsolved, but Mohamed praised police and members of the public for their role in bringing about arrests in Mussa's case. Northwind Hart, 32, of no fixed address, was charged with second-degree murder Friday. His brother, Kendall Brian Hart, 22, has now also been charged Link Another one gone, another mother sheds tears...Alla caruurtaan Soomaalida ilaahoow usoo maciin...
