^^ me, like you I didn't listen to Somali music much but now that I'm interested it's hard to figure out who's good and who's merely an imitator. Everyone's going on about heesahii hore, and how those fanaan were really talented and the young'uns are terrible. I like Benaadari songs, even though I don't understand much of the lyrics. My sisters were teens in Somali and they used to listen to these songs and get all emotional and SENTIMENTAL. I have a favorite Qur'an reciter too, just phenomenal voice, his first name is C/Raxman, can't remember his last name.

Khayr, Also, why the rules for making someone guilty of fornication/adultery/rape are so stringet i.e. 4 WITNESS present during the actual act of penetration (a virtual impossibility) What about pregnancy? Is that admissible evidence for adultery/fornication?

This is a very interesting discussion folks. I don't know if the origins of HIV is anything more than natural, but I do know that some African governments could do a much better job of battling the AIDS epidemic. South Africa's blight has a political basis rooted in the leadership willfully blinding themselves to the scope of the problem. In contrast, countries such as Uganda have managed turn the tide of the epidemic by taking effective measures to educate people and implementing policies that actually work.

Surambaya, what rules are you talking about? Dave is doing a wonderful job, and many of us are silent readers in awe at his hard work and dedication.

Good luck Stoic. With all the advice about firm handshakes I'm worried the guy's gonna rip the interviewer's arm off

Socod_Badne, Originally posted by Socod_badne: The pertinent thing to do on your part is to repudiate her objection by showing Islam didn't spread via through pillaging and acquisition of wealth . Why is the onus of proof on Cambarro? If two people make conflicting claims (and I don't think Naden actually makes the statement you attribute to her), both ought to present facts to bolster their case. At any rate, Cambarro wasn't taking about the spread of Islam, but the flourishing of science and the arts in in some parts of the Islamic world in the Middle Ages (in contrast to the stifling of such in Europe). No one is contesting that, surely?

^The kids attacking the egg Everyone's slamming on the hotel bit, but it was easily the funniest part of the movie. I was laughing so hard while trying not to watch too closely. I liked the bit with the nice old Jewish couple with the bed-and-breakfast. Throwing dollar bills at the cockroaches, truly inspired. The film crew must've planted them though.

Seeker, Your 8 year old sister is dieting? That's seriously disturbing. About Rennaisance standards of beauty--most American women weight at least as much if not more than the Reubenesque models of the 17th century. But then those models were unrealistically heavy for women of the 17th century. I think beauty is simply whatever takes effort and money at any one point in time. That's why the Chinese bound little girls' feet, why Middle Easterners favor restrictive clothing, why being pale was fashionable in Europe (because it meant you didn't do any menial labor that would give you a tan), but now it's being tanned that's sexy (because you can afford a holiday in the sun). Che's right. You gain some, you lose some. I just think the gains far outweight the losses overall.

Nin-Yaaban,buy a PS3 to watch DVDs? Aren't regular DVD players much cheaper? The only games I've played in the last year are the Halo and Half-Life series, neither of which is on the PS3 platform. I'd get an Xbox 360 if I thought I'd actually have time to make much use of it.

Cambarro, Originally posted by Cambarro: To a true atheist, there can be no more ultimate meaning to good and bad actions than to good or bad weather. Are you truly unaware of any theories or systems of morality that don't hinge on a father-like figure who watches your every move and punishes you if you're a bad girl? Atheism can not provide a compelling argument at the concepts of ethics and morality themselves. That is true. But then neither can religion. Religious people aren't moral, they are afraid. They avoid doing bad things (the ones that do anyway) not because those things are wrong, but because they fear punishment. They do good so they can be rewarded. It's all ultimately a selfish drive that stems from a worship of self. If a religious person was informed that they should kiss their first-born and then bake them in the oven, they'd happily do it. At least, the "TRUE" religious people would. Anything to attain hedonistic bliss in the afterlife. Am I being sarcastic enough or should I lay it on a bit more? I just can't understand people who make declarations about what other people MUST believe or think. It's breathtakingly arrogant, and coming from a person who's castigating secular democracies for being intolerant!

'Stranger Than Fiction' looks good; Will Ferrell is becoming one of my favourite comic actors. I think it comes out on the 10th stateside. I'm not a big Bond fan, more into Austin Powers

Yes on being on the donor registry. I don't see why my body is better off being eaten by worms than saving someone's life. I noticed a lot of Somalis are leery of the concept. Until they or someone they love needs an organ, then it's kosher Keep in mind that in most cases your next of kin will actually have to give permission to have your organs harvested in the event of your death. So educating them and informing them of your wishes is important.

The sad thing is that K-Fed was doing a show in Toronto yesterday, and apparently gushing about what a wonderful wife he has and how she's so supportive of him.

Originally posted by Khayr: What Secularity does is say that Secularism is at the Apex and that Religion is at the bottom of the pyramid of society. Religion is seen as unpragmatic because it does not work at creating a Utopia on earth. It does not solve world hunger or increase the employment rate or help people get jobs etc. It works on a set of different principles which are rooted in the Divine and the Revelation. Whhere as the former-Secularism, works on the premise that Revelation can't guide man. But then the question would be-towards what purpose-Attaining Heaven on Earth or preparing us for Heaven, where we belong ? Khayr, it's not Religion vs. Secularism, it's Theocracy vs. Secularism. Religions exist and flourish in secular democracies. There are several churches, a mosque, a Sikh temple and a synagogue within a two-mile radius of me right now. I'm unlikely to go to any of them, but most of my neighbors are affiliated with one or the other. In fact, Secularism is the best way of protecting the integrity of Religion. By removing worldy incentives to go to the church/mosque, true spiritual searching free of coercion and materialistic calculation is possible. And isn't that what monotheistic religions claim we're here to do? Let's say that we lived under some kind of theocracy in which religious beliefs were enforced and those who deviated were punished. Would this not create conditions contrary to the intentions of a god who wants to test individual choice? In Islamic theology, the idea is that humans (unlike angels and demons) have freewill AND conditions under which their freewill can be exercised. To create a system in which people are curtailed by a fear of the state makes the test conditions invalid, wouldn't you think?
