A genuine moral act "always" constitutes the desire that others do well , without that an action fails to qualify beeing moral, that we eat our dinner is not particularly moral , neither is grudgingly helping NGONGE whom we otherwise wish to drop dead is a moral act, and it is absolutely not morality to help someone besouce that someone or someone else on his behalf either threatens you with punishment or promises you a reward. J.B. ( I take it Cara too) is your defintion of Morality. Might this be one of the reasons, if not the MAIN reason why you reject Religion? No, it's not a major reason. But it's something worth discussing.

Xiinfaniin, In principle, if one can’t genuinely discern right from an obvious wrong and relies someone’s else judgment to take a fitting action on it, then is it not reasonable to conclude that the fault lies with that person’s sluggishness and not with the level of the moral clarity of the issue at hand? You have my heartfelt agreement there, walaal. It's precisely because I cannot accept a moral code in which homosexuality is a huge sin, but the purchase and sale of human beings merely "regulated" that I find religious codes of questionable utility in making the right choices. I agree with you on one thing though: Furqan’s ideal teachings may not always be reflected in the individual practices of its adherents. That wasn't my point. It's not that people fail to follow what they think are the correct teachings of their religious texts, but that people have vastly different interpretations of these same texts. So my example of men who kill themselves as a means to kill innocent people is hardly a cheap shot. The point is that these men believe that the Furqan's message justifies (nay, demands) their actions. I gather you disagree vehemently. So essentially what we have is people who are completely certain in their faith in the same book, but whose moral outlook as derived from that book couldn't be more different. Oh, but I'm sure you'd both agree that pork is haram, and what a comfort that is.

Too much horror, not enough Sci Fi.

Fartun, make sure to consult with your doctor. Diabetes is a serious complication in pregnancy and your health and that of your child will have to be carefully monitored.

I'm going through all the pages MMA, mouthing the words and struggling with the definitions xitaa. As a side-note: I would've said "erayadii lumay". Is that incorrect or a dialect thing?

Khayr Originally posted by Khayr: you sure your 'circle of friends' does not largely constitute members of the asylum? What your arguing for is INSANITY (doubting themselves and question whether they are in the right continously) Obviously, you've never visited people in an insane asylum (otherwise known as the psychiatry unit in a hospital in the modern era). The one defining feature of insanity is absolute certainty. An insane man never doubts that that someone's implanted a tracking device in his ear, or that he's Jesus, or that he can turn into a teacup. I think they get released when they begin to question that certainty. JB, you can't expect people with different views to debate with you. That's insane

Paragon, Thus the hearts holds superiority over the brain. The heart is a fist-sized organ that pumps blood. It's not the seat of morality or emotion.

I think Janna's contribution is far more graphic

MMR, Red Sea's pick-up line is why no loving mother would ever name her daughter "Luuq" Bun is also a kind of coffee drink, milder than qaxwo, with lots spices like qorfe and sanjabiil (I know sanjabiil is Arabic, is qorfe?). It's drunk by women more, I think. I believe it's made from ground coffee bean shells, rather than the bean itself.

Xiinfaniin, Moral certainty is a curious defense for religiosity, I think. People who fly passenger planes into high-rises are filled with moral certainty and faith in the Qur'an, which is the same Qur'an adhered to by other people who consider them to be barbaric heretics. George W. Bush's religious faith is not in doubt, yet he willfully destroyed a nation and caused the deaths of many, all the while giving lipservice to his unshakeable faith in a Loving God. And yet there are Christians who condemn his actions as un-Christian! I think it's not that religious texts give clear-cut guidance, but that religious people tend to be filled with moral fervor, and which position they take on any question is a function of personality quirks, since anything can be defended using any religious text. So a kind well-meaning person will focus on the parts of his religious text which promote treating others well, whereas a morally bankrupt individual will find equally heinous justification for his actions. I rather surround myself with people who doubt themselves and question whether they are in the right continously. It's a healthier atmosphere, and makes for more congenial conversations to boot

The data is from the 19th century. How relevant is it to today? The article also does not cover maternal mortality. The younger a woman is when she has children, and the more children she has, the younger she is when she dies (of 'old age'). I guess it's a trade off. Would I want to live to 100 in return for my mother living to 60?

MMA, Take, for example, the word "qaxwo." The Carabta, of course, called it qaxwe then the Cismaaniyiintii in Turkiya spelled it kahve. [The letter 'v' pronounced as 'w,' as it is to this day in many countries.] It was Italianized to caffe, then into English coffee and our own Soomaali, kafee or to turn back originally, qaxwo. Couldn't the Somali word {"Qaxwo") have a more direct origin in the Arabic "Qaxwe"? A few people even say "Qaxwe" actually.

Hehe, it would make it easier to remember all the rules about right and wrong. Oh dear, is that a... yes it is! I'm enjoying myself! Haram! But seriously, why is music (particularly music with instruments) considered haram by some? Is there actual textual support for that position?
-
The music is a bit too mellow and earnest for my taste, but he does have a distinctive voice.

Layzie, that's unkind and demeaning. How do you mean he could do much better than her? Couldn't she posssibly do much better than him?

Now it looks like Dilbert .

Zafir, don't listen to JB. The new manhood is being flexible and able to do whatever needs to be done Really though, you're destroying all my dreams of a house husband. I thought guys would at least not be so full of suuro.

Congrats and best wishes, Bisharo. Saash-saarka goorma waaye?

Zafir, listening and talking takes even less effort! I think some exercise is in order for the boys, if it takes so little to exhaust them. How about a treadmill near the washing machine? Throw in a load, hop on the treadmill. You can even hang delicates to dry on the handles
