Sheh, first Alle-Ubaahne, and now MKA Yoonis. Some girls have all the luck...

LOL. Xiin, Af-Carabiga maa iga daysid? But please, do share more. If being a Somali woman has taught me anything, it's how to cultivate a thick skin By the way, I am not so foolish as to suggest that men sat around and did no work, not in the baadiye anyway (that's miyiga to our Northern brethren ). Certainly the women worked harder, but life was a struggle for everyone. A man may spend 20 years acquiring 100 she-camels, 3 wives, and a handful of children, only to lose almost everything during a bad jiilaal. Perhaps Xoogsade's nostalgic reminiscences are merely the romantic projections of a thoroughly modern mind, yearning for that era when "men were men and women were women". But alas, I'm all too familiar with the cruel reality of life in the good old days. Wili boorkii Boosaaso aga-gaarkeeda cagaha kama jafin, marka geelkaaga baahi u dhintay iska haysoo i sii silsilad dahab ah!

Red, I thought the garbage man took the garbage OUT. Dabshid, do you think your friend (and anyone else who just happens to have pornographic emails to forward) perhaps creates a market for that kind of business? About 12 photos, eh?

I did say "if you want excitement"... Many (me included) would rather settle for a more humdrum existence, possibly involving hot water bottles

LOL. Red Sea, was dear mum peering over your shoulder? Rudy, don't start that nonsense.

Xoogsade, now who's misrepresenting facts? Men didn't work 40 years to win the hand of a particular woman they cared about. If they did, they'd be marrying other 40 year olds. Men worked 40 years, married a girl 20 years their junior (often in her teens), worked a little harder, married another one, travelled to a neighboring village and acquired a third, maybe divorced the problematic 2nd one, paraded their sons in front of their male peers, and generally didn't treat their women with any more consideration than they gave their she-camels. I'd rather have the funny jokes, thanks.

^I read that whole article and not a word about Anna Nicole Smith or the cause of her death

LOL. Is that a proposal I'm hearing Che?

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind... John Donne, Meditation XVII

LOL. Run over, "gaari miyaa ku jiiray?" Regarding fulay and the plural fulay, it's all about which syllable is stressed. In fulay, singular, the stress is on the second syllable. Fulay, plural/feminine, the stress is on the first syllable. That's why the ending is more rushed. This is coming from a few sleepless nights in childhood trying to figure out how "inan" (young man) was different from "inan" (young woman).

Keynan, forget accomplishments, I'd say hambalyo if Somalis didn't kill one another en masse for a day. Talk about low expectations... Northerner you had a hand in the bridge's construction? Kudos.

'Waykan' is probably a contraction of 'waa i kan'. "I waykan" sounds like af-jini

Who says marriage is supposed to be exciting? Ever heard of the term "sowing your wild oats"? You're supposed to get all fun out of the way before getting down to the grim business of shackling yourself to a tolerable man/woman for the rest of your life. The reason so many marriages fail nowadays is because people like you have the wrong expectations about them. If you want excitement after marriage do what everyone does: have an affair.

What if it doesn't work out? Will there be a picture of the two at divorce court and an informative article on how marriages fails in the boondocks of Somalia?

^LOL. Dabeyshaa la duulaysa dee. Much safer to stitch it on. Xarago waa xanuun as my grandmum says.

Originally posted by Zafir: Cara, I am dead serious, if my sister isn’t rational; needless to say I would beat his **** to a fcuking pole and fill out the divorce papers my self. But on the other hand, if my sister /daughter are a rational being who know what's best and the choices in life. I expect them to make that judgment. The old Somalia saying comes to mind: “walaashaa iskuma hubtide, seedigaa ha isku dirin” or something along those lines. That's a terrible saying! The problem is that physical beatings are only a small part of the overall abuse and degradation these women are suffering. Someone with low self-esteem and no support system is easy to cow into submission, and after a while she may convince herself that the abusive husband is expressing his love, or that he will change if she stops "aggravating him". The best thing you can do in that condition is to remove the woman from the arena, not wait for her to come to her senses.
-
^Are you serious? If your sister was being beaten black and blue by her husband you would tell her you don't want to meddle in her affairs? How rational can she be if she wants to remain with an abusive spouse?

Bokero, my apologies. I didn't mean to put you down, I was just being silly. I'm curious about this Bokero character too. There's a page on Wikipedia, but only the Deutch language one. The English Wiki only refers to him in a page on the Majimaji Rebellion, which does seem to have gone very well for all involved.
