u better be kidding, no one calls me sexist and gets away with it
-
^^The point I wasnt being sexist, bt for the most part, somali mothers concern themselves with such issues.
-
The point in that case just have your mom choose your partner, so u can have first hand experience.

Zenobia thanks for the clarification sis. wa salaamu alaikum

Xanthus, I don't believe any one can be forced to marry some one nowadays. However, most Somali parents love to stick their nose in their children's love lives...hooyo maanta nin fiican aa soo arkaay kaalay iska arag, ninkas oo kale wali la ma arag lamana maqal, and they would brag about him. But, that doesnt mean you have to marry him, you have two options get to know him and see where that leads you, or just tell them you can find your own partner. It is really simple as that. There is no such thing as arrange marriage where you are forced and are being held by the collar in somali community. But other cultures you would be surprised walahi, I have a friend from srilanka, she was telling me how she has to marry only those men their parents choose, like they have a say but it is limited. Like she can refuse the man her parents present, but she will have to wait till they have another suitable man, she cant look for a man on her own, that is unheard of. So, I think as Somalis we get to choose our partners, parents do suggest but I am yet to see a somali parent forcing their daughters to marry a particular man. They can suggest, brag about him give him tons of compliments, ninkan wuxu ka dhashay reer wacan oo wuu shaqeestay oo wa dheeryahay oo wa qurxoonyahay bt thats all a talk..dhag ka gali dhagta kale ka saar. Dont pay them any attention, unless u are interested. In that case if you choose to get to know him or marry him, the choice was ultimately yours. Therefore, it is arranged marriage not forced. wa salaamu alaikum

Why do somalis name their children "Abdi", I haven't seen any somali families who call their children with just the name Abdi. However, they usually shorten their names with just Abdi, one of my brothers being One. I don't think it has much to do with others not being able to pronounce it correctly, I am sure others can just pronounce it , if u were to say lets Abdi Aziz or abdi rahiim. It is more of a culture, most somalis introduce themselves as Abdi, it is just easier. It might has rooted from being ignorant as to what Abdi means. But, it is all about your intentions, even though it would be a good thing if somalis started calling themselves with their full names. As Ngonge mentioned arabs also call themselves Aziz, or Hakim even though it is not appropriate relegiously speaking. Anyhow, I don't see the big deal if an Arab person took the time to correct you, and told you hey do u know Abdi means slave, perhaps u shouldnt call yourself Abdi. No biggie, unless you guys are just hating on arabs. Just imagine if some one just called emself adoon, wouldnt you thought it was kinda funny wa salaamu alaikum

Insha allah we should all strive to increase our Iman , and what better way than reading the koran. Rudy you gave a good suggestion, it is good to keep the koran close by. May Allah guide us and show us the right path. Amin wa salaamu alaikum

The Prophet (peace be upon him) married Aisha when he was fifty-three years old and she was nine years old. So this should tell us that age doesnt matter. The prophet pbuh was only 25 when he married Khadija who was about 40. So, if a woman wants to marry a man who is thirty years her seniors so be it. However, I personally don't think I can share a life with some one so much older, it wouldn't work in every aspect. But, lets try to be positive, otherwise we would be against the prophet pbuh, given that he married both a woman so much older, and a woman so much younger. that is my two cent for now. wa salaamu alaikum

I'm quiet intrigued, how do you define ‘housewife’? Rahima, it is quite self explanatroy. However, nowadays lota people would be insulted, if you were to ask them if they are willing to become a houswife. Honestly, they are just being ignorant. Look at every culture, whether they are white, black, chinese, women stay at home to take care of their kids. there is nothing wrong with puting your career on hold for few years so you can take care of your young kids. wa salaamu alaikum
-
Nothing is wrong with being a housewife if it means u'r taking care of yr husband n kids. people make it seem being a housewife as something horrible, it is your duty as a wife.It all depends how u define that term. Anyhow, I never said anything abt being a housewife all your life, bt till your kids reach school age, sounds fair to me. wa salaamu alaikum

I think 10 years difference is fine, anything more than that you wont have anything in common. for instance, I am 20 if I start dating a man in his 50s what we gonna do for the first date...adeer inakeen shaaah aan so wada cabana eeh ..ii dhiib barkoorada wa dalanahaye aan ku tukube ..I guess u got the point, I am not his personal nurse an not cut for that kinda job. But, everyone is entitled for their choices. It makes me wonder though, why anyone would wanna date some one 30 years their senior, unless he is filthy rich and u wanna get rid of him and inherit all his money so u can enjoy the rest of yr life with a man of yr dreams, bt havent seen any old somali man whose rich so that aint the reason...some one just tell me one valid reason Caravaggio, there is nothing wrong with using animals in the lab as long as it is for medical purposes, and there are ofcourse certain ethical procedures one has to follow. wa salaamu alaikum

Hayam sis I just felt like sharing how I use to conduct interviews and whenever I asked them something abt themselves, these seniors would go on an on , it is amazing how much they know abt themselves. Basically nothing is hard abt answering that simple question of telling abt yrself. Anyhow, lol sorry to confuse u hun he was prolly talking abt phone shukaansi as Jacaylbaro pointed out. So, u r the kinda person who just says something just cuz u think the brother wants to hear that, why dnt u just say whatever u feel like, if he doesnt like it he can hit the road walaal. I honestly say whatever that comes to mind, no need for second thoughts to impress anyone. But, I do agree, u should bull shit through an interview, there is no need to lie, bt u gota say what they want to hear depending on the situation. wa salaamu alaikum

MMA low income families tend to live in areas such as dixon, or Jane and finch. It all comes down to financial reasons. But, given that it is been 17 years we would expect somalis to educate themselves and compete for better jobs and aim for a better life style. It is sad but it seems it became a trend most somalis I see are either taxi drivers, factory workers, or umm yeh security guards. So, it is like history repeats itself, what kinda of life style can some one who has a low paying job offer?....an apartment in dixon wa salaamu alaikum

One morning the husband returns after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap. Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out. She motors out a short distance, anchors, and reads her book. Along comes a Game Warden in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, "Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?" "Reading a book," she replies, (thinking, "Isn't that obvious?") "You're in a Restricted Fishing Area," he informs her. "I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading." "Yes, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you in and write you up." "If you do that, I'll have to charge you with sexual assault," says the woman. "But I haven't even touched you," says the game warden. "That's true, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment." "Have a nice day ma'am," and he left.

I use to conduct phone interviews back in HS, some people r so nice walahi u would be surprised. specially those white folks they would stay on the phone with u for 45 min if they have to,not only would they answer yr question they would comment on every lil thing, I would be like argg can u just answer n move on. They must be so loney I figured (most of these people were like in senior houses, I bet they dnt get much company). Anyhow, I do understand what u mean some girls happen to ask questions directly like tell me abt yrself, instead of just going with the flow. what is so hard abt that question? unless u dnt know yrself..in dat case see a shrink wa salaamu alaikum

Well said chief. We should refrain from tribilism all together, we are somalis and proud at that. wa salaamu alaikum
