Odaysomali, I agree totally with what you have passionately advocated. However, I also believe this came 15+ years late, as it would have been an ideal thing in mid/late nighties. The is no higher moral ground for SL & PL to bang on. They had their opportunity, to do the right thing and, save the nation from the warlord polititions in the south. Guys like Egal and Yey could have (if they wanted) saved the nation in its darkest days. But, they became greedy men, blinded by the zero sum politics of the geeljire qabyaalad. Instead of leading from the front, they cawardly have chosen to sit behind the illitrate Gadhcas and appease them with short sighted politics based on reer hebel maxay dakane naga qabaan. Why Puntland cant print their version of Somali shillings (100, 500, 1000, 5000) signed and distributed by the PL central bank. Instead of this stupid mass plagiarism (coloured 80gsm paper) printed in the past two decades. They need to form proper monetary regulations, where PL central bank is credible institution that control the liquidity in the economy. Nominate PL central bank board of 11 members, giving half of the board members to the private sector and, link the decision making directly to the economy. Once credible Federal central bank comes to light they can join it with their baggage.

Out of laziness or short shortsightedness, he never cared to tell his audience what are the current exchange rates! Earlier this year, I had the pleasure to use the SL shillings (exchanged at around $1 = 7000) According to the Author of the article, in ten years the shilling value changed from 5000 to 7000 against $1. This must be some kind of a miracle itself, considering conditions on the ground which include, lack of recognized functioning state, poor economy and security issues. In experience, the SL shilling interns of the the quality of the paper-note (500, 1000, 5000) was magnificent, and the central bank managed the currency efficiently, given the lack of proper functioning financial institutions. If I had the authority, I would have made the SL shilling the de-facto currency for all Somalia and, the Central Bank for all Somalis in North, East, Central and South based permanently in Hargeisa. The SL shilling has been resilient in the past decade. However, it can be killed if not managed carefully, by the current finance minister's late shilling only transactions tantrums.

I see people not given any consideration when paving the roads. However, Garowe looks good. The young private electricity company in the city is one of the best in terms of efficiency and planning, comparing to other well established Nomad cities I have seen.

If you know the list of Arab funded projects in PL alone you will eat your words back: - Schools such as Imam Nawawi with 20k plus stundents, Hamdan and others. - 7 technical and teachers training instutions (most of them mis-used and poorly run by the locals since 1993) - Galkayo veterinary college - East Africa University - Mogadishu University - the upcoming Makhir University - the upcoming Garowe Airport - The sprawling base of the Puntland Maritime Police Force That is not even an exhaustive list, and if you look further across, Both Hargeisa Airport runway, the Airport terminals in Berbera, plus the huge orphane boarding school outside Hargeisa, and city's water infrustrucure are all funded by non other than Arabs.
